The channeler route exists because the FBI doesn't have walk-in offices for personal record requests. The FBI maintains the official list of approved channelers on its website. The major players for personal record requests include:

• IdentoGO by IDEMIA — the largest network with thousands of enrollment centers at UPS stores, office parks, and government buildings across all 50 states
• Accurate Biometrics — operates primarily in the Midwest and Northeast with a strong presence in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio
• Telos ID — specializes in federal and international clients, with locations in the D.C. metro area and select major cities
• Fieldprint — widely used for professional licensing and teacher certification fingerprinting

Fees range from $30 to $75 for the channeler's service, plus the mandatory $18 FBI processing fee. The total out-of-pocket cost runs $48 to $93 depending on the provider and your location.

Channeler vs. USPS vs. Mail-In: Which to Choose

Channelers work best when you need results fast and have a location nearby. The 24-to-48-hour turnaround is the main selling point.

USPS fingerprinting (through ips.usps.com) is another electronic option with similar speed, but availability is limited to participating post offices and the service fee is $50.

Mail-in (Form 1-783 + FD-258 cards) is the cheapest route at the $18 FBI fee plus $5–$25 for ink rolling, but processing takes 2 to 6 weeks and can stretch to 12 to 14 weeks during peak seasons.

If your timeline is tight — a job offer contingent on a background check, a visa application deadline, or a licensing board submission — the channeler route is usually worth the premium.

How the Channeler Process Works

1. Visit the channeler's website and search for an enrollment center near you
2. Schedule an appointment (walk-ins are sometimes available, but scheduling guarantees the technician and equipment are ready)
3. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and your FBI Electronic Departmental Order confirmation if you registered through edo.cjis.gov
4. The technician scans your fingerprints digitally — the process takes about 10 minutes
5. Your prints are encrypted and transmitted to the FBI's national database
6. Your Identity History Summary is emailed to you as a digitally signed PDF, typically within 24 to 48 hours

A Few Things to Watch For

Channelers handle the fingerprint capture and transmission, but they don't interpret results or help you dispute errors. If your FBI report comes back with inaccurate information — a missing disposition, a charge that was dismissed, or someone else's record attached to your file — the dispute process goes through the original reporting agency, not the channeler.
