Indiana License Reinstatement After OWI: Fees, Requirements, and Steps

After months of dealing with court requirements, SDP restrictions, and SR-22 filings, license reinstatement is the final administrative checkpoint. The BMV won't restore your privileges until every item on their list is cleared — and the list is specific enough that missing one step sends you back to the start.

The Reinstatement Checklist

Before the BMV will lift the suspension, you need all of the following:

  1. Suspension period served — the applicable administrative suspension (180 days after a failed test, one year for a refusal, or two years for a subsequent refusal) must have elapsed. Qualifying pre-trial administrative time may be credited against a later judicial suspension only when there was no refusal; it does not eliminate the administrative period itself.
  2. Court-ordered requirements completed — substance abuse evaluation, treatment/education program, victim impact panel, community service, and probation compliance. The court transmits proof of completion to the BMV.
  3. Active SR-22 insurance — your insurer must have an SR-22 certificate on file with the BMV at the time of reinstatement. Verify this by checking your BMV driving record — if the SR-22 doesn't show, the reinstatement will be denied even if your insurer says they filed it.
  4. Reinstatement fee paid — $150 to $300, depending on the specific suspension codes on your Official Driver Record
  5. No outstanding holds — check your driving record for any additional suspensions, unpaid tickets, or administrative holds that could block reinstatement

Reinstatement Fees

The BMV reinstatement fee for a standard first-offense OWI is typically $150 for a first suspension. The fee increases if your record shows multiple suspensions or concurrent violations.

Payment methods:

  • Online through the myBMV portal
  • By phone through the BMV automated system
  • Mail-in coupon (included with your suspension notice)
  • In person at a BMV branch or BMV Connect kiosk

The fee is assessed per suspension, not per offense. If both the administrative and judicial suspensions appear as separate entries on your record, you may owe separate reinstatement fees for each.

Fee Waiver and Installment Options

Financial hardship waiver: You can petition the circuit or superior court in your county of residence to waive the reinstatement fee based on financial indigency. The court reviews your income, expenses, and ability to pay. If granted, the court issues an order that the BMV must accept in lieu of payment.

Installment plan: Under BMV Form 1152, if your total outstanding reinstatement fees exceed $150 and you've met all other reinstatement requirements, you can arrange a payment plan. The minimum payment is $50 every 30 days. While on the installment plan, the BMV can issue a conditional driving authorization so you're not waiting for full payment to drive legally.

The Reinstatement Process Step by Step

Step 1: Check your Official Driver Record on the myBMV portal. Look at every active suspension and its specific reinstatement requirements. Some drivers discover additional holds they didn't know about — old unpaid tickets, insurance lapses, or suspensions from other states reported through the Interstate Compact.

Step 2: Verify that all court-ordered compliance has been transmitted to the BMV. If your substance abuse program or probation completion isn't reflected on your BMV record, contact the court clerk — the transmission sometimes lags.

Step 3: Confirm your SR-22 is on file. Call your insurer and verify the electronic filing, then check the BMV record after a few business days.

Step 4: Pay the reinstatement fee (or present a court waiver order).

Step 5: Visit a BMV branch to receive your physical license. Bring government-issued identification and be prepared for the standard photo and documentation process.

After Reinstatement

Getting your license back doesn't end the OWI's financial impact:

  • SR-22 must continue for three consecutive years from the reinstatement date. Any lapse triggers a new suspension.
  • Insurance premiums remain elevated for the duration of the SR-22 period and often beyond.
  • Probation continues independently of license reinstatement — complete all remaining court requirements.
  • The OWI stays on your driving record — Indiana does not expunge driving record entries, though the criminal conviction may eventually be eligible for expungement under IC § 35-38-9.
