Why Order Matters More Than Anything Else

The most expensive mistake in Mississippi license reinstatement isn't a fee — it's paying fees in the wrong order. Drivers routinely go to the DPS online portal, pay a $100 or $175 reinstatement fee, and assume their license is active. Then they get pulled over and discover the suspension is still in place because the underlying court hold was never cleared.

The DPS Driver Service Bureau is the final step, not the first. Before DPS can do anything, every originating court and agency that placed a hold on your record must individually clear that hold. That's the part most people skip — and it's the part that actually matters.

Step 1: Pull Your Motor Vehicle Report

Before you pay anything to anyone, you need to know exactly what's on your record. Your MVR lists every active suspension hold, the originating jurisdiction, and the violation category.

Three ways to get it:

• Online: DPS Self-Service Portal, $14.31 by credit or debit card. The record is a one-time view active for 24 hours — save or print it immediately, because you cannot access it again.
• By mail: Complete Form DPPA-2, have it notarized, and send it with an $11 money order (no personal checks) to Driver Records Division, P.O. Box 1459, Canton, MS 39046.
• In person: Bring Form DPPA-2 and a valid state ID to any DPS driver's license station. Fee is $11.

Read the MVR carefully. List every hold, identify which court or agency owns it, and note the violation type. Many drivers have multiple holds from different sources — clearing three out of four still leaves you suspended.

Step 2: Clear Each Hold at Its Source

Each suspension type has its own clearance process:

Failure to Appear (FTA): Contact the municipal or justice court clerk where the citation was issued. Resolve the ticket by appearing in court, entering a plea, or setting up a payment plan. Get a physical copy of the Court Abstract (sometimes called "My Clear Form") — this is the document that proves the court released the hold. The court is required to transmit it to DPS electronically, but that can take weeks. Mail a certified copy directly to the Driver Records Division in Jackson to speed things up.

Child support: Call the MDHS Child Support Call Center at 877-882-4916. Complete Form 475 (the Noncustodial Parent License Reinstatement Questionnaire), which requires a full disclosure of your income and expenses. You'll need to execute a notarized stipulated agreement for an arrears payment plan. Once approved, MDHS must notify DPS within seven days.

Uninsured driving: Resolve the court citation first. Purchase a qualifying insurance policy (Mississippi's 25/50/25 minimums), and have your insurer file an SR-22 with DPS. You'll maintain the SR-22 for three continuous years — any lapse resets the clock.

Out-of-state holds: Contact the out-of-state DMV, satisfy their requirements, and get a physical clearance letter. Submit it directly to Mississippi DPS because electronic updates between states can lag significantly.

Step 3: Complete Any Required Programs

For DUI holds: Enroll in and complete the Mississippi Alcohol Safety Education Program (MASEP) — a 12-hour course across four weekly sessions. The fee is $225 for in-state, $275 for verified online out-of-state. Confirm that MASEP transmits your completion certificate to DPS.

For insurance holds: Your SR-22 must already be on file with DPS before you can pay the reinstatement fee.

Step 4: Pay Reinstatement Fees

Once all holds are cleared and prerequisites are satisfied:

Pay online at the DPS Reinstatement Portal (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex) or by mail with a money order to P.O. Box 1459, Canton, MS 39046. Personal checks are rejected.

If your license expired during the suspension, add the renewal fee: $24 for a 4-year renewal, $47 for 8-year, plus a $1 late surcharge if expired over 30 days.

Step 5: Wait for the Clearance Letter

After processing, DPS mails a clearance letter to your residential street address. It cannot be forwarded to a P.O. Box, so make sure your address is current. To verify active status before the letter arrives, call Driver Records at 601-487-7028 or email [email protected].

Do not drive until your status is confirmed active on the MVR. Paying the fee does not automatically make the license valid — processing takes time.
