Mississippi SR-22 Insurance: Requirements, Cost, and How Long You Need It

What an SR-22 Is (And What It Isn't)

An SR-22 is not a type of insurance. It's a certificate of financial responsibility — a form your insurance company files electronically with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety to prove you carry at least the state-minimum liability coverage. Think of it as a guarantee from your insurer to the state that you're covered.

Mississippi requires an SR-22 after two types of suspensions:

  • DUI / implied consent violations — required as part of reinstatement alongside MASEP completion and the $175 reinstatement fee
  • Uninsured driving convictions — required alongside the $100 reinstatement fee and resolution of the court citation

Mississippi's Minimum Coverage

The SR-22 must certify that your policy meets Mississippi's 25/50/25 minimum liability limits:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 property damage per accident

Your insurer files the SR-22 directly with DPS — you don't submit it yourself. Filing typically takes 24 to 48 hours to process. Confirm with DPS (601-487-7028) that the filing is on record before paying your reinstatement fee.

How Long You Need It

Three consecutive years from the date of filing. The key word is consecutive — any lapse in coverage, even a single day, triggers an immediate administrative suspension and resets the three-year clock back to zero.

An SR-22-related lapse can trigger an immediate administrative suspension, so keep coverage continuous. There is no grace period.

This means:

  • Don't let your policy lapse between payment cycles
  • Don't switch insurers without confirming the new company files a replacement SR-22 before the old one terminates
  • Don't cancel your policy early, even if you think you're past the three-year mark — verify with DPS first

What It Costs

Ask the insurer whether it charges a separate SR-22 filing fee. That charge is separate from your insurance premiums and the DPS reinstatement fee.

Because an SR-22 is associated with DUI or uninsured driving convictions, you'll be classified as a high-risk driver. Expect your premiums to increase significantly — sometimes doubling or tripling — for the full three-year period. The exact amount depends on your insurer, driving history, age, and location within Mississippi.

Shopping around matters. Not all insurers handle SR-22 filings, and rates vary widely among those that do. Get quotes from multiple carriers before committing.

Common SR-22 Mistakes

Paying the reinstatement fee before the SR-22 is on file. The DPS online portal will accept your payment regardless, but the reinstatement won't be processed until the SR-22 filing is confirmed. Verify first, pay second.

Switching insurers without overlap. If you change insurance companies, the new carrier must file a replacement SR-22 before the old policy terminates. Even a one-day gap counts as a lapse and restarts your three-year requirement.

Assuming the SR-22 ends automatically. At the end of three years, confirm with DPS that the requirement has been satisfied before changing or canceling coverage.
