The Official Way to Check Your Status

South Dakota's Department of Public Safety runs the Driver License Eligibility Check portal — the only reliable, free source for your current license status. You need four pieces of information to run the check:

• First name
• Last name
• Date of birth
• Last four digits of your Social Security number

The portal returns your current status: Active, Suspended, Revoked, Canceled, or Ineligible. It also lists any outstanding reinstatement requirements — unpaid fees, missing SR-22 filings, or external agency holds.

Don't use third-party "license lookup" sites. They charge fees for information you can get free from the state, and entering your name, SSN digits, and date of birth on an unverified site creates identity theft risk. The only portal you should use is the official one through sd.gov.

What the Portal Shows — and What It Doesn't

The eligibility check gives you a snapshot: your status right now and what the DPS says you need. But it has blind spots.

The portal doesn't display your full driving history. It won't show you conviction dates, the point values of each violation, or the precise statutory basis for your suspension. To get that level of detail, you need to request a certified driving record from the DPS — $7 per copy, submitted by mail or in person at a driver exam station. The full record is the only way to map out exactly which violations are stacking against you and calculate when each suspension period expires.

The portal also doesn't show holds from external agencies in real time. If you paid a court fine yesterday, the clerk of courts may not have transmitted the clearance to the DPS yet. That 24–48 hour processing delay means the portal can still show "Suspended" even though you've satisfied the underlying obligation.

What Each Status Means

Active: Your license is valid. No holds, no restrictions (unless a restriction code appears — like "corrective lenses" or a work-permit limitation).

Suspended: Your driving privileges are temporarily withdrawn. The license itself isn't destroyed — once you clear the holds and pay the reinstatement fee, you get it back without retaking any exams unless the license has expired.

Revoked: Your license is canceled. Reinstatement requires retaking the vision screening, the written knowledge test (80% passing score), and the practical road skills test. DUI convictions and vehicular homicide offenses trigger revocations.

Canceled: Administrative cancellation, often for immigration status changes, medical impairments, or fraudulent applications. The reinstatement pathway depends on the specific cancellation reason.

If the Portal Returns an Error

Some drivers enter their information and get an error or "no record found" instead of a status. First verify that your name and date of birth match the state's records exactly. Don't assume "no record found" means you're clear — it just means the system can't match your query.

After the Status Check

Knowing your status is step one. What comes next depends entirely on what holds are listed:

• Court fines or FTA flags: Resolve through the county clerk of courts or the Obligation Recovery Center
• Child support holds: Contact the DCS Licensing Section in Pierre
• SR-22 or insurance requirements: Have your insurer file the certificate electronically with the DPS
• Out-of-state holds: Contact the state that issued the hold directly
