The DPS Does Not Offer Payment Plans

This is the single most important fact about paying for South Dakota license reinstatement: the Department of Public Safety requires the full reinstatement fee — whether it's $75, $100, $150, $200, or $225 — paid in one lump sum at the driver exam station. No installment plans, no partial payments, no exceptions.

The applicable application fee is also due in full at the same time: $38 for a standard license or $43 for a CDL. If your license was revoked and you need to retake exams, those exams are administered at the same visit.

You can pay by cash, check, or card at the exam station. Credit and debit card payments incur a processing fee: $2.00 or 2.95% of the transaction, whichever is greater.

Court Fines Are Different — Payment Plans Exist

While the DPS won't let you pay reinstatement fees in installments, the courts handling your underlying traffic debt are more flexible.

County Clerk of Courts: If your fines are still with the local court (not yet transferred to collections), you can request a monthly payment plan through the clerk of courts in the county where your citation was issued. Contact the clerk directly — payment plan availability and terms vary by county.

UJS ePay: South Dakota's online payment portal for court fines allows full payment electronically. However, ePay typically doesn't support installment arrangements — those need to be set up in person or by phone with the clerk.

Obligation Recovery Center (ORC): If your court debt was transferred to the ORC (after 14 days without paying in full or establishing an approved payment plan following the court's final notice), the ORC offers its own monthly payment plan. But the ORC adds a non-waivable 20% cost recovery fee to your total balance before calculating the installment amount.

The Key Distinction

Drivers frequently confuse court fines with reinstatement fees and assume that because the court offers a payment plan, the DPS does too. They are separate obligations paid to separate agencies:

Can You Pay the Reinstatement Fee Online?

Not currently. The reinstatement fee must be paid in person at a driver exam station. Some routine licensing transactions — like standard renewals — can be done online, but reinstatement requires an in-person visit because the DPS needs to verify your identity documents, check that all holds are cleared, and (for revocations) administer the required exams.

Strategy for Limited Budgets

If you can't afford to pay everything at once, the order matters:

1. Set up court payment plans first. Clearing the court hold through a payment plan costs nothing upfront and starts the clearance process.
2. Negotiate the child support repayment agreement if applicable — the DCS hold must be lifted before the DPS will reinstate.
3. Save the DPS fees for last. The reinstatement fee and application fee are the final payments in the sequence. Paying them before your holds are cleared wastes money — the DPS can't process your reinstatement until every external block is removed.
