Texas Driving Record for Court: Which Type You Need and How to Order It

Why the Record Type Matters

Texas DPS offers six different driving record products, and courts will reject your petition or filing if you bring the wrong one. The most common mistake: ordering a Type 3A Certified Complete History for an Occupational Driver License petition. Courts require a Type AR Certified Abstract for ODL filings — a Type 3A won't be accepted, and you'll need to order the correct record and restart the filing process.

Getting the right record on the first try saves both money and time, especially when court dockets are already 2–4 weeks out.

When You Need the Type AR

The Type AR is the gold standard for anything related to license reinstatement. It's the only record that captures:

• Every past suspension, revocation, and cancellation (not just active ones)
• Complete enforcement action history across your entire driving career
• Records from any prior license numbers or state ID cards (if consolidated)
• The full ledger that courts use to determine ODL eligibility and waiting periods

Any ODL petition filed without a Type AR will be rejected. The Type AR is also what you should use to build your complete hold inventory before starting the reinstatement process, because the DPS License Eligibility Portal only shows active items — not the full history that determines your compliance requirements.

Consolidation: The Step Most People Skip

Before ordering your Type AR, confirm with DPS that all your historical records are consolidated under your current license number. If you've held a Texas license under a different number in the past, or if you had a Texas state ID card before getting a license, those records may exist separately.

An unconsolidated record means your Type AR could be missing holds, convictions, or suspension history. If you file an ODL petition based on an incomplete record, the court may discover undisclosed suspensions during the hearing — which results in immediate denial and potential credibility issues with the judge.

To request consolidation, contact the DPS Driver License Division before ordering the record.

How to Order Online

Go to the Texas.gov driver record request portal (search for "order Texas driving record" and look for the official Texas.gov site). You'll need your driver license number, date of birth, Social Security number, and a valid email address.

Select "Type AR — Certified Abstract" from the record type dropdown. Pay by credit or debit card. The record is typically available for download within minutes.

How to Order by Mail

Download Form DR-1 from the DPS website. Fill in your information, select Type AR, and mail it with a check or money order for $20 (payable to "Texas Department of Public Safety") to:

Using Your Record for Reinstatement Planning

Once you have the Type AR, cross-reference it against your DPS License Eligibility Portal results and the Texas Failure to Appear database. The portal shows what's currently active; the Type AR shows the complete story, including past suspensions that may affect waiting periods or habitual violator calculations.
