Reinstatement Isn't Automatic

When your administrative suspension period ends — 90 days for a standard first offense, 6 months for a test refusal — your driving privileges don't flip back on by themselves. You need to actively reinstate your license through WYDOT, and that means clearing several requirements before they'll issue a new credential.

Driving before completing reinstatement is still driving on a suspended license, which carries 7 days to 6 months of mandatory jail time in Wyoming. Don't assume the calendar alone restores your rights.

The Reinstatement Checklist

Every item on this list must be complete before WYDOT will process your reinstatement:

1. Verify your suspension period has ended. Contact WYDOT Driver Compliance at 307-777-4839 or [email protected] to confirm the exact date your suspension officially expires. Don't guess based on the arrest date — the effective start date may differ depending on whether you filed a hearing request and when the OAH ruled.

2. Complete all court-ordered requirements. If you were convicted or received a deferred prosecution, the circuit court likely ordered a substance abuse evaluation (ASI assessment), a DUI education class, and a Victim Impact Panel. You need proof of completion for each one.

3. Confirm your SR-22 is active with WYDOT. Your auto insurance carrier must have filed an SR-22 certificate directly with WYDOT — and it must still be active. Wyoming requires SR-22 coverage for 3 consecutive years after a DUI suspension. Any lapse, even for a day, triggers an immediate automatic re-suspension.

4. Pay the $50 reinstatement fee. Payable through the oneWYO portal, in person at a WYDOT Driver Services office, or by mail to Cheyenne.

5. Pay for a new Class C license. The standard driver's license fee is $45.

If You Had an Ignition Interlock

Drivers who were on an IIRL have additional steps. The interlock provider must confirm successful completion of the interlock period — meaning no violations or tampering events. The device must be professionally removed by a certified technician. WYDOT receives the completion certificate from the vendor before processing reinstatement.

The SR-22 Three-Year Requirement

The SR-22 filing is the requirement that trips people up long after the suspension itself is over. Wyoming requires three consecutive years of SR-22 filing; confirm the exact start and end dates with WYDOT rather than counting from the arrest, sentencing, or reinstatement date.

SR-22 policies typically cost $500 to $1,500 more per year than standard auto insurance. If your policy is canceled or coverage lapses for any reason, WYDOT suspends your license again immediately. You would then need to restore coverage and complete any required reinstatement steps.

Some Wyoming drivers switch to a carrier that specializes in high-risk policies to keep SR-22 costs manageable. The filing itself costs $25 to $50 as a one-time fee from the carrier.

Common Mistakes That Delay Reinstatement

• Assuming the court and WYDOT talk to each other. They don't. Completing your court requirements doesn't automatically notify WYDOT. You need to provide proof to both entities separately.
• Paying the reinstatement fee before the SR-22 is on file. WYDOT won't process reinstatement without an active SR-22, regardless of how many fees you've paid.
• Forgetting the substance abuse assessment. Some drivers complete the DUI class but skip the separate ASI evaluation. Both are required.

How Long the Full Process Takes

If all requirements are already met, WYDOT typically processes reinstatement within a few business days of receiving your fee and verifying your SR-22. The bottleneck is usually getting the SR-22 filed — some insurance carriers take a week or more to process the filing.
