How the Compliance Clock Works

The Kentucky Ignition Interlock Program (KIIP) requires a continuous violation-free monitoring period before your suspension is lifted. For a first DUI offense, that period is 90 consecutive days. For second and subsequent offenses, it is 120 consecutive days.

The critical word is "consecutive." Any program violation resets the counter to zero. A driver who is 85 days into a 90-day requirement and triggers a violation starts the 90-day count over from day one.

What Counts as a Violation

The KYTC recognizes six categories of interlock violations. Each one resets your compliance clock:

Failed breath test. A breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) reading above 0.02 triggers a violation, unless a follow-up test within 10 minutes comes back below that threshold. The 0.02 limit is well below the legal driving limit of 0.08 — a single beer shortly before starting your vehicle can register a fail.

Missed rolling retest. The device randomly prompts for a breath sample while you are driving. Missing or failing to provide a sample within the required window is a violation, unless the integrated camera verifies that the driver was not in the vehicle at the time of the prompt.

Missed calibration appointment. Interlock devices require monthly calibration and data download at an approved vendor. Failing to bring the vehicle in on schedule is a violation even if you have not been driving.

Tampering or bypass attempts. Any verified attempt to tamper with, disable, or bypass the device triggers a violation. This includes physically altering the wiring, using compressed air, or having someone else provide the breath sample.

Camera obstruction. Modern interlock devices have integrated cameras that photograph the driver during each breath test. Obscuring or altering your identity on camera during a test is a violation.

Non-payment of provider fees. Falling behind on monthly lease payments to the interlock vendor is reported to the KYTC as a program violation.

What Happens After a Violation

A single violation resets your consecutive violation-free day count, so you must complete a new compliance period. The KIIP rules do not extend that new period beyond the original suspension timeframe. Convictions under KRS 186.560 can affect eligibility or lead to revocation of an interlock license.

A recorded violation resets the compliance period. Confirm with the KYTC how it affected your compliance status before assuming you have completed the required days.

Typical Costs

• Device installation: $70 to $150 (one-time)
• Monthly lease and monitoring: $60 to $90 per month
• Calibration/data downloads: Usually included in the monthly fee, but some vendors charge separately
• KIIP application fee: $105 (non-refundable, paid to the KYTC)
• Removal: $50 to $100 (requires prior KYTC authorization via Form TC 94-204)

Drivers who qualify for financial hardship can apply for reduced vendor fees using Form TC 94-188 (KIIP Affordability Application). You will need to provide federal tax returns, W-2s, or benefit statements documenting your income.

Choosing a Vendor

Kentucky maintains a list of approved interlock providers. The KYTC does not recommend specific vendors, but your choice of provider affects your monthly costs and the convenience of calibration appointments. Before committing, check the vendor's service center locations relative to where you live and work — you will be making monthly visits for the duration of your compliance period.

If you need to switch vendors or move the device to a different vehicle during your compliance period, you must submit Form TC 94-204 and receive written KYTC approval before any physical changes are made.
