How to Check Massachusetts License Suspension Status

The myRMV Portal Is Your Starting Point — Not Your Final Answer

Most people assume they can log into myRMV, check their status, and know exactly where they stand. That's partially true. The portal does show whether your license is active, suspended, or revoked. What it doesn't show is the full picture — hidden holds from child support delinquencies, drug offense suspensions, and default warrants from courts that never updated the RMV's system.

To check your current status, log into the myRMV portal using your MyMassGov Personal account. Navigate to "My License" and look at the status field. You'll see one of several designations: Active, Suspended, Revoked, or Non-Renewable. If your status shows anything other than Active, there's at least one unresolved hold blocking your privileges.

The critical limitation: myRMV's online display pulls from the standard unattested record ($8), which omits certain hold categories that only appear on the full certified driving history from the Merit Rating Board. If your license shows as suspended and you're not sure why, the online portal might not tell you.

The Three Record Tiers and What Each One Reveals

Massachusetts maintains three distinct levels of driving records, each designed for different purposes.

The unattested driving record costs $8 and is available online through myRMV. It shows your standard violation history and current status, but it lacks the Registrar's official stamp and cannot be used for court hearings or Board of Appeal proceedings. It's fine for a quick status check.

The true and attested driving record costs $20 and carries the Registrar's official signature and stamp. This is the only version accepted at Board of Appeal hearings and in court proceedings. Request it online through myRMV — the RMV prints it on official letterhead and mails it to your address of record. Allow ten business days for delivery, or pick it up in person at the Chinatown/Boston or Haymarket Service Centers.

The full certified driving history from the Merit Rating Board exposes everything — including child support holds, drug offense suspensions, and default warrants that standard records omit. Submit the "Authorized Release of Personal Driving History/Full Certified Driving History" form to the RMV Court Records Department if you suspect multiple or hidden suspensions.

How to Verify Your License Is Actually Reinstated

Paying your reinstatement fee through myRMV does not automatically mean your license is active. The RMV's ATLAS system treats every suspension as an independent administrative event. Clearing one hold does nothing about the others.

After paying fees and resolving all holds, take these verification steps:

1. Check myRMV again — your status should now show "Active." If it still shows "Suspended," you have unresolved holds remaining.
2. Request a true and attested driving record — this is the certified document to use for official court or Board of Appeal proceedings.
3. Visit the Chinatown/Boston or Haymarket RMV Service Center — request the true and attested record in person if you need paper confirmation.

A paper receipt showing you paid a reinstatement fee is not proof that your license is active. Neither is a screenshot of the myRMV portal. Do not drive until the RMV record shows Active, because operating while suspended can lead to a G.L. c. 90 § 23 charge.

When the Portal Says "Active" But You're Still Blocked

There's one scenario that trips up drivers who rely entirely on the online portal: a new hold can be placed on your license after you've already confirmed an active status. Court defaults, insurance lapses, and out-of-state reciprocal actions can all trigger a new suspension without warning.

If you've recently resolved a suspension and plan to start driving again, pull a fresh attested record the week you intend to drive. The $20 cost is small compared with the criminal penalties for operating on a suspended license under G.L. c. 90 § 23.
