What the Driver Service Bureau Handles

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety Driver Service Bureau (DSB) is the central authority for all driver's license functions — issuance, renewal, reinstatement, and record management. If you're dealing with a suspended license, the DSB is the final stop in the process, not the first. You'll need to clear your underlying court holds and agency obligations before the DSB can act on your reinstatement.

What You Can Do Online

The DPS Self-Service Portal handles several reinstatement tasks without visiting an office:

Pay reinstatement fees — The online portal accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Enter your license number or the last four SSN digits exactly as they appear on your record. Fee amounts: $175 for DUI/implied consent, $100 for FTA or uninsured driving, $25 for child support.

Purchase your Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) — $14.31 online. This is the diagnostic step that shows every active hold on your record. The online view expires after 24 hours — save or print it immediately.

Check license status — You can verify whether your license shows as active or suspended.

When You Must Visit in Person

Some reinstatement tasks cannot be completed online:

• Ignition interlock verification: If you have a DUI or implied consent suspension and are getting an interlock restricted license, you must bring the IID-equipped vehicle to a DPS station for physical inspection
• CDL reinstatement: CDL medical downgrade fees ($100) must be paid in person at a CDL licensing station
• Expired license renewal during reinstatement: If your license expired during the suspension period, you'll need to renew it ($24 for 4-year, $47 for 8-year) which may require an in-person visit depending on how long it's been expired

The Kiosk System

Mississippi Code § 63-1-16 requires DPS to provide a kiosk or examiner in each county seat at least one day per month upon request. In practice, scheduling is inconsistent, and many rural county seats don't have regular kiosk availability.

For counties without a permanent station, the kiosk schedule is the main access point. Contact the DSB by phone or email to confirm the next available date for your county seat before making the trip. Rural drivers in the Delta and Appalachian regions often face significant travel distances to the nearest staffed DPS office.

Mailing Documents to Speed Up Reinstatement

Even though courts are required to electronically transmit Court Abstracts and clearance forms to DPS, the electronic process can take weeks. You can significantly speed things up by mailing certified copies of your clearance documents directly to the Driver Records Division.

Include your full name, license number, and date of birth. Use certified mail with return receipt for tracking. Personal checks enclosed with any fees will be rejected — use money orders or certified cashier's checks.

After mailing, call 601-487-7028 to confirm receipt and check processing status. DPS will mail your clearance letter to your residential street address on file — it cannot be forwarded to a P.O. Box, so keep your address current.
