Two Types of Records, Two Different Uses

Alabama offers two versions of your driving record through ALEA, and they serve very different purposes. Ordering the wrong one can leave you with a false sense of security about your license status.

Standard 3-year Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) — this is the one most people request. It covers violations, convictions, and administrative actions from the past three years. It costs $5.75 and is available online through the ALEA portal. Employers, insurance companies, and background check services typically use this version.

Full-history Driver Abstract — this is the document you need if you're trying to identify every active hold on your license. It covers your entire lifetime driving history, including legacy suspensions, old revocations, cancellations, and holds that may predate the three-year window of the standard MVR. This is the version ALEA's reinstatement offices use when processing your case.

The danger of relying on the standard MVR for reinstatement purposes is that it won't show a hold from a six-year-old unpaid ticket or a decade-old at-fault accident while uninsured. Those legacy holds can remain active, leaving you vulnerable to immediate re-arrest if you drive on what you thought was a clean record.

How to Get Your Standard MVR Online

Visit the ALEA Driver License portal and navigate to the driver records section. You'll need to provide your full legal name, date of birth, and Alabama driver's license number. Pay the $5.75 fee by credit card, and the record is typically available immediately as a downloadable document.

This is sufficient for employment screenings, insurance quotes, or a general check on your recent violations and point status.

How to Get Your Full Driver Abstract

The full-history abstract requires a different process. You need Form DL-102 from the ALEA website, and you must submit the request in person at an ALEA examiner's post with a valid government-issued photo ID. The standard online portal does not offer the full abstract.

The in-person requirement exists because the full abstract contains sensitive lifetime information and ALEA verifies identity before releasing it.

What to Look For on Your Record

Active holds and suspensions — each entry shows the originating agency (court, Department of Revenue, DHR, or ALEA administrative) and the reason for the action. This tells you which agency you need to contact to clear each hold.

Points — Alabama's point system tracks violations within a rolling two-year window. At 12 points, your license is automatically suspended. Each traffic conviction carries a specific point value (for example, speeding 1–25 mph over the limit is two points; reckless driving is six points). Points remain active for suspension calculation for exactly two years from the conviction date, but the conviction record stays on the abstract permanently.

SR-22 filing status — if you're required to maintain an SR-22 financial responsibility filing (typically after a DUI or at-fault uninsured accident), the abstract shows whether the filing is current. A lapse in SR-22 coverage triggers an immediate new suspension.

Out-of-state holds — because Alabama is a member of the Driver License Compact, holds from other states are reported through the National Driver Register and appear on your Alabama abstract. An unresolved ticket in Georgia or a suspended license in Florida can block reinstatement in Alabama.

Third-Party Record Sites Are Not Reliable

Commercial background check sites and paid record search services pull from aggregated databases that may be outdated or incomplete. They're not connected to ALEA's real-time system and may miss active holds, recent clearances, or pending administrative actions.
