How to Check Your Kentucky License Status on the myDrive Portal

You suspect your Kentucky license might be suspended, but you're not sure — and you definitely don't want to find out by getting pulled over. The state's myDrive portal at mydrive.ky.gov is the official way to check your status, pay reinstatement fees, and manage your credentials online. But actually getting into the system has a catch that trips up thousands of drivers.

Checking Your License Status

There are two ways to verify your current standing:

Purchase a Driving History Record (DHR). This is the definitive method. A three-year DHR is available online through drive.ky.gov for $6, or you can get a full historical record in person at any KYTC Regional Office for $3 (credit card, money order, or cashier's check — no cash or personal checks). The DHR lists every active suspension, hold, and the statute behind it. It's also the document you'll need to figure out which agency controls each hold if you have multiple.

Use the myDrive portal. Once your account is linked, myDrive shows your current license status, active suspensions, and available online transactions. But linking your account is where most drivers get stuck.

The Letter ID Requirement

To link your myDrive account to your physical identity, you need a Letter ID — a unique alphanumeric code printed on an official KYTC document dated on or after June 6, 2026, and issued within the last 60 days. This is a security mechanism the state implemented as part of the transition to the new Kentucky Driver Licensing System (KINDL).

If you don't have a recent Letter ID, you have two options:

Request one by mail. KYTC will send a new Letter ID to the address on your record. This takes 5 to 10 business days — and if your address isn't current, the letter goes to the wrong place. Kentucky law requires you to update your address with the KYTC within 10 days of moving, but plenty of drivers haven't.

Visit a Regional Office in person. You can complete the account linking at any KYTC Regional Driver Licensing Office. This is the faster route if you need access quickly, and it bypasses the mail delay entirely.

A common mistake: drivers who moved during their suspension period never updated their address. That means KYTC has been sending notices — including the Letter ID — to an old address. Before requesting a new Letter ID, make sure your address is current. An address update costs $15 at a Regional Office.

What myDrive Can and Can't Do

Once linked, myDrive lets you:

• Check your current license status and see active holds
• Pay the $40 non-commercial reinstatement fee online
• Upload KIIP (ignition interlock) documents
• Update your address

What it can't do:

• Pay CDL reinstatement fees. Commercial license reinstatements must be processed in person at a Regional Office.
• Clear court holds. Failure to Appear and Failure to Pay suspensions require resolution directly with the issuing county court. KYTC can't accept court fine payments.
• Clear child support holds. These require authorization from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services before KYTC can act.
• Remove out-of-state blocks. National Driver Register holds must be cleared by the originating state.

Common Pitfalls

Paying the fee doesn't mean you're reinstated. The $40 reinstatement fee is the final administrative step. If court holds, child support holds, or DUI compliance requirements are still active, paying the fee does nothing — your license stays suspended until every underlying hold is cleared first.

Third-party status-check websites are unreliable. Several commercial sites offer to check your license status for a fee. These pull from outdated databases and miss recent changes. Use your DHR, the myDrive portal, or KYTC confirmation instead.

The portal doesn't show you everything. While myDrive displays active suspensions, interpreting the entries requires understanding which statute triggered each hold and which agency controls the clearance. A DHR gives you the complete picture with statutory references.
