How to Check Your Idaho Driver's License Status Online

Checking Your License Status on the ITD Portal

Idaho lets you check your driver's license status for free through the ITD online portal. You don't need an account — just your identifying information.

To run the check, you'll need your first and last name, date of birth, and either your driver's license number or Social Security number:

• First and last name
• Date of birth
• Either your driver's license number or Social Security number

The portal returns your current license status. For ordinary unrestricted driving, you're looking for one word: "Valid." A Restricted Driving Permit (RDP) is a separate, limited authorization and does not change the portal status to "Valid."

What the Other Status Labels Mean

"Suspended" — One or more active holds are preventing you from driving. You need to identify each hold, resolve the underlying condition, and pay the reinstatement fee before your status can change.

"Revoked" — More severe than a suspension. A revocation means your license has been formally canceled. Requirements to regain driving privileges depend on the reason for the revocation and ITD's instructions; do not assume a suspension-style reinstatement will be enough.

"Disqualified" — Applies specifically to commercial driving privileges (CDL). Your CDL is disqualified, though your Class D personal license may still be valid depending on your record.

"Not Valid" / "Expired" — Neither label shows ordinary unrestricted driving authority. If your license has been expired for 25 months or more, you must take all applicable knowledge and skills tests before renewal.

What the Free Check Doesn't Show

The free online status check gives you a snapshot, but it has limits:

Out-of-state holds may not appear immediately. The National Driver Register (NDR) and Driver License Compact data syncs between states aren't instant. If another state issued a suspension or hold against you, there can be a delay before it appears on your Idaho record. If you suspect you have unresolved issues in another state, contact ITD Driver Services directly rather than relying on the online portal alone.

The check doesn't break down individual holds. It tells you whether your status is "Valid" or "Suspended," but it doesn't list every specific hold or the resolution requirements for each one.

Getting the Full Picture: Your Driving Record

For a detailed view of every active hold, suspension history, and compliance requirement, you'll need to purchase your Driver License Record (DLR). The three-year record costs $7 through the ITD online portal.

The DLR lists:

• Every active suspension and its cause
• Effective dates and expiration dates for each hold
• Point accumulations and violation history
• Any out-of-state holds that have been reported through the compact

This is the document you need before starting the reinstatement process. It tells you exactly how many holds you have, what caused each one, and what you need to resolve. Drivers who skip this step and try to reinstate from memory routinely miss secondary holds they didn't know existed.

When to Check

Check your license status on the ITD portal:

• Before driving after any suspension period ends. Your license doesn't automatically become valid when a suspension period expires — you must complete the reinstatement process first.
• After paying reinstatement fees. Check again for the posted result. Don't drive until the portal shows "Valid."
• After resolving an out-of-state hold. Interstate clearances can take days or weeks to propagate. Check daily until the hold clears.
• Before renewing your license. If there's an unresolved hold, your renewal will be denied.
