The Single-Fee Rule (and Its Exception)

For example, if you have a point suspension ($25) and a failure-to-appear hold ($85) arising from the same set of unpaid tickets, you'd pay $85, not $110.

The important exception: DUI-related suspensions can carry separate fees for the civil and criminal tracks. A failed-test DUI case followed by a criminal conviction can involve both a civil Administrative License Suspension (ALS) and a criminal court suspension. If you fail the chemical test and are later convicted of DUI in court, you owe both the $245 ALS fee and the $285 criminal reinstatement fee — $530 total in reinstatement fees alone, before you account for court fines, SR-22 costs, or interlock expenses.

How to Pay Idaho Reinstatement Fees Online

ITD eliminated all online convenience fees for license reinstatement payments as of September 2023. You can pay through the DMV online portal without any surcharge.

To pay, you'll need your driver's license number or Social Security number. The portal accepts credit and debit cards. After paying, verify that the fee has posted before relying on the status update.

You can also pay in person at a county driver's licensing office or by mail to ITD Driver Services, PO Box 7129, Boise, ID 83707. Confirm with the office how the payment will post, and do not drive until the ITD status shows "Valid."

Fees You Owe Beyond the Reinstatement Fee

The reinstatement fee is just the ITD administrative charge. Depending on your situation, you likely owe additional payments before ITD will process your reinstatement:

• Court fines: All outstanding fines must be paid or a deferred payment plan established before the court issues a clearance receipt. Pay through the iCourt portal at courtpay.idaho.gov.
• Child support arrears: Must be paid in full or a repayment agreement signed before CSS issues a release to ITD.
• License card reissue fee: After reinstatement, you'll pay a separate fee at the county licensing office for your physical license card.
• SR-22 insurance: Not a government fee, but it may be required for DUI, ALS, test-refusal, uninsured-driving, or RDP situations. The filing charge and premium impact vary by insurer and driving history; get a quote for your situation.
• Ignition interlock device: Lease costs typically run $70-100 per month for the duration of your interlock requirement.

Common Fee Mistakes to Avoid

Paying the reinstatement fee before clearing upstream holds. If you have outstanding court debt, an active child support hold, or a missing SR-22, paying the ITD fee alone won't reinstate your license. Resolve the underlying conditions as required, and confirm with ITD when the fee should be paid; RDP applications require the specified fees to be prepaid.
